Hundreds of thousands of Muslims across Qatar  turned out this morning for the traditional Eid prayer, which this year was held at 5:47am at some 278 mosques and outdoors prayers grounds, according to the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.

Afterward, many headed to butcheries for the customary “sacrifice” of a domestic animal (camel, cow, goat or sheep), whose meat is meant to be shared amongst family, friends and the needy on this occasion.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and his father and former Emir Sheikh Hamad, received sheikhs, ministers and other state dignitaries at the Al Wajba Palace west of Doha, Qatar News Agency reports.

The Qatar Tourism Authority has co-organized a slew of activities to entertain residents and visitors alike who’ve remained in the country, including performances at the malls and Souq Waqif, tours of the State Mosque and fireworks at Katara after dark.
