A new step towards a greener Qatar was announced by Qatar Petroleum (QP) on Sunday.
QP’s Refinery in Mesaieed began supplying Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) to Doha’s domestic transportation market on Sunday, bringing the Diesel sold in the country to the highest European Emission Standard specifications.
The local petrol supplier’s recent move displayed its commitment towards the environment in the State of Qatar and globally, given the extremely harmful effects of sulphur dioxide on the environment and the health of individuals.
“We are pleased to announce this new addition to our products, which supports two of our strategic objectives….continuous efficiency improvements and environmental excellence,” said Saad Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy and the President of QP.
ULSD’s production follows the successful upgrade of the QP Refinery’s Diesel Hydro-treating Units, which is also part of QP’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment through world-class standards and practices.
“The production of ULSD by Qatar Petroleum is an important milestone for our downstream business, and I would like to thank my colleagues in QP operations who have worked diligently and safely to ensure that we achieve this important environmental milestone, which meets the stringent ‘Euro 5’ specifications,” explained Al-Kaabi.

The reduction of sulphur is crucial in environmental protection and in reducing the effects it has on one’s respiratory health.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, short-term exposure to the toxic gas is harmful, especially to children and people with respiratory diseases like asthma. As for the environmental effects of sulphur, it can damage plants and impact negatively on the growth of trees. Additionally, the gas can contribute to acid rain.
The city of Doha currently stands at 95 on the Air Quality Index, which is considered to be moderate.
