After frantically working through the summer, Ashghal has announced the completion of construction on Civil Defense junction.
The new signalized intersection officially opened to traffic yesterday, hopefully spelling the end of big backups in the busy area.
In a statement, Ashghal said that in addition to getting rid of the roundabout, all roads leading to the junction have been widened from three to four lanes.
Additionally, a third lane was added for commuters turning left at the Medical City intersection, for those heading toward Hamad Hospital.
A third lane was also added for motorists coming from Sports Roundabout and turning to go toward TV Roundabout.
Farewell roundabouts
As the population rises and congestion worsens, Ashghal has been working to convert several roundabouts into free-flowing intersections.
The public works authority, which completed this latest overhaul in only four months, said:
“The reconfigurations come as part of the Development of Intersections and Roundabouts Project in several areas in Greater Doha aimed at enhancing the traffic flow and reducing the congestion in major areas.”
A few major junctions remain, including Sports Roundabout and TV Roundabout – though it is unclear for how much longer.
