Qatar Museums has begun vetting potential food truck operators ahead of plans to set up five such businesses at the MIA Park after the summer.

Cuisine categories include sweets and desserts; hot drinks and snacks; cold drinks and ice cream; “western” food; and “eastern” food.

Potential candidates will need to submit several documents, including concept and business proposals, to QM by July 30.

Selected applicants would run their food trucks from Oct. 1, 2016 to the end of April 2017.

Food trucks

Food trucks are a popular feature in several cities around the world in part because they give people a chance to sample several different types of food at once.

Over the past year, Qatar businesses have been dipping their toes into the food truck industry.

So far, only one local restaurant, Burgeri, has a roving food truck that sells burgers, fries and drinks at various spots around Qatar.

Other eateries erected food truck-like kiosks for the first time during the 2016 Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) in March.

It is unclear why Qatar lacks food trucks, but starting a business here can be difficult, due to the many steps needed to register with the government.

Another deterrent may be that the country holds restaurants to stringent food handling and preparation standards.

To that effect, those who apply to set up at the MIA Park will need to submit several health and hygiene-related documents.
